– Creating your own brushes in PS is super easy! The largest size a brush can be is 2500 x 2500 pixels and that is usually how big I make mine. So start by opening a new file that size. Make sure the background you choose is always white.
– Open the image, clip art, photo, or text that you want to use to make your brush. It is best if it is in black and white. Colors or gray areas will come out in shades of gray in your brush. (Some preparation of your image may be needed to get it brush ready). Drag your image over to the new file you opened and resize it to fit inside the box. Flatten the file (or CONTROL-COMMAND/SHIFT/E).
– Go up to Edit, then Define Brush Preset. You will get a pop up box where you will be able to rename it. The name really doesn’t matter much. Save it.
– Repeat those steps if you are going to make several brushes or a set.
– When you are finished with your brushes, go to the Preset Manager. (you can get that by either going to Edit/Preset Manager, or with your brush tool selected, go to the top bar and click on the down arrow, then the right arrow to the Preset Manager.
– All the brushes you just made will be there. Don’t worry if the current brushes that were loaded are there too. Select all the brushes you want to create your new set and highlight them. (or just delete the brushes you don’t want. don’t worry, they won’t be deleted forever…) Click on Save Set and name your new brush set. That’s it!! Make sure when saving your new brushes, that they are going into the right directory. It should be in the folder C/Program Files/ Adobe/Photoshop (your version)/Presets/Brushes. You will have to restart Photoshop before your new set will show up.
